How does the medication work?
Allegra is a IIIrd generation antihistamine preparation. It belongs to a group of medicines called H1 histamine receptors blockers. The medication does not possesses a sedative activity and does not penetrate through the blood-brain barrier. By blocking H1 histamine receptors Allegra prevents the effects of histamine: inflammation, swelling, constriction of the smooth muscles which are associated with allergy. Antihistamine effect is observed in one hour after administration, reaches its maximum in 6 hours and lasts 24 hours.
Why is Allegra prescribed?
Allegra is prescribed:
- for the relief of seasonal allergy symptoms (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic hives in children at the age of 6 to 11 years (for tablets 30mg)
- for the relief of seasonal allergy symptoms (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic hives in adults and children over 12 years of age (for tablets 120mg)
- in symptomatic treatment of chronic idiopathic hives in adults and children over 12 years of age (for tablets 180mg)
When Allegra should not be taken?
Do not take Allegra in:
- children under 6 years of age
- children under 12 years of age (for tablets 120mg and 180mg)
- pregnancy
- breastfeeding
- hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
Allegra should be used with caution in chronic kidney failure
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Allegra may cause:
- CNS: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness
- Digestive system: nausea
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Allegra?Allegra may interact with:
- Certain antibiotics (erythromycin). Erythromycin increases blood concentration of fexofenadine
- Antimycotics (ketoconazole). Ketoconazole increases the blood levels of fexofenadine.
- Antacids which lowers the bioavailability of the preparation. Do not take Allegra within 2 hours after the application of fexofenadine.
Let your doctor know if you are taking any of the above mentioned medicines or other preparations including herbals, vitamins and food supplements as they may change the effectiveness or increase the risk of Allegra side effects.
