How does the medication work?
Clarinex is antihistamine preparation, selective blockers of peripheral H1- histamine receptors. The active ingredient of the medication is desloratadine active metabolite of loratadine. After oral administration the medication selectively blocks peripheral histamine H1-receptors without penetration through the blood brain barrier. Clarinex inhibits the cascade of reactions responsible for the development of allergic reactions:
- Production of inflammatory cytokines: IL-4, IL-8, IL-6, IL-13
- Release of RANTES and other inflammatory mediators
- Hemotaxis and adhesion of eosinocytes
- IgE- dependent release of prostaglandines D2, histamine and leukotrienes C4
- Production of superoxide anion by the polymorphonuclear leukocytes
- P-selectine expression
- Acute bronchospasm of atopic origin
Why is Clarinex prescribed?
Clarinex is used for rapid relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharges, itching and nasal congestion, itching and eye redness, lacrimation, itching of the palate.
Clarinex is used in chronic idiopathic hives for decreasing and elimination of itching and hives.
The medication is intended for oral use. The tablet should not be swallowed as a whole without maceration and washing down with a sufficient quantity of water.
When Clarinex should not be taken?
Clarinex should not be used in:
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Severe liver diseases
- Severe kidney diseases
- Phenylketonuria
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Clarinex may cause the following side effects:- CNS: dizziness, muscle pain, dry mouth, excessive tiredness, headache, insomnia
- Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, increased appetite.
- Respiratory system: bronchitis, cough.
- Other: otitis media, infection of the urogenital system, menstrual pain
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Clarinex?
- Antibiotics (erythromycin). Erythromycin may change the blood levels of desloratadine
- Antifungals (ketoconazole). Ketoconazole may increase the blood levels desloratadine
