How does the medication work?
Flonase is a corticosteroid for oral administration. In recommended doses the medication exerts anti inflammatory, anti-exudative and and anti allergic effect. The therapeutic mechanism of the medication is associated with inhibiting the production and release of inflammatory mediators called prostaglandines, histamine, leukotrienes, cytokines. Anti-allergic action is observed in 2-4 hours after the first administration. Flonase decreases nasal itching, sneezing, cough, nasal congestion, pressure around the nose and eyes. In therapeutic doses the medication does not exerts systemic action and does not affect
hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. The effect of the medication lasts within 24 hours after one administration.
Why is Flonase prescribed?
Flonase nasal spray is used in prophylaxis and treatment of seasonal and all year round allergic rhinitis.
When Flonase should not be taken?
Flonase nasal spray should not be used:
- in children under 4 years of age
- hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- chickenpox or the measles infection (or have not been vaccinated against them)
- Tuberculosis
The medication should be used with caution in concomitant herpes virus, bacterial infections of the upper airways, after surgical interventions on the mouth cavity and nasal traumas, ulcerous damages in the nasal cavity, concomitant use of other steroids(glucocorticoids) including tablets, creams, bronchial asthma preparations, nasal and eye sprays, nasal drops.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Flonase nasal spray may cause the following side effects: nasal bleedings, headache, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, cough, runny nose, abdominal pain, flu-like symptoms, dizziness, bronchitis.
In rare cases the medication may cause the sings of steroid toxicity, asthma symptoms.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Flonase ?
- Antibiotics (Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Telithromycin, Isoniazid)
- Antifungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole)
Antibiotics and antifungal agents increases the blood levels fluticasone and may increase the risk of Flonase side effects
- Protease inhibitors. These medications can significantly increase the blood levels of Flonase nasal spray.
Let your doctor know if you are taking any of the above mentioned medicines or other preparations including herbals, vitamins and food supplements as they may change the effectiveness or increase the risk of Flonase side effects.
