How does the medication work?
Zyrtec is a competitive antagonist of histamine which works by blocking H1-histamine receptors. Zyrtec prevents the development and reliefs allergic reactions, possesses anti-exudative and antipruritic action. Zyrtec affects the first histamine dependent stage of allergic reactions, prevents the release of inflammatory mediators, decreases eosinophils, neutrophils and basophils migration, stabilizes the membranes of the mast cells. The medication lowers the permeability of capillaries, prevents the development of edema, decreases spasm of the smooth muscle. In therapeutic doses does not exerts a sedative effect.
Why is Zyrtec prescribed?

When Zyrtec should not be taken?
Zyrtec should not be taken
- if you have a hypersensitivity to cetirizine or other ingredients of the medication
- in children under 6 month
- in pregnancy
- in breastfeeding
Zyrtec should be used with caution in kidney failure, elderly patients (gromerural filtration may be decreased).

Zyrtec may cause the following side effects:
