How does the medication work?
Co-trimoxazole is a combined antibacterial preparation, the drug exerts a broad spectrum of effects . The drug works by blocking the biosynthesis of dihydrofolic acid, thus preventing the transformation of the acid into its derivatives which plays a significant role in the synthesis of nucleic acids.
Why is Bactrim prescribed?
The drug is prescribed in treatment of susceptible micoorganisms in the following disease:
- Respiratory tract infections bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis, sinusitis, lung abscess
- Urogenital infections pyelonephritis, urethritis, prostatitis
- Gastrointestinal infections dysentery, typhoid, cholera, infectious diarrhea
- Skin and soft tissue infections - abscess, phlegmon
When Co-trimoxazole should not be taken?
The drug must not be taken in the following conditions:
- Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
- Pregnancy
- In children prior to 6 weeks of age
- Severe cardiac disorders
- Renal and liver insufficiency
- Hematological disorders
- Glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
Exert caution in the following cases:
- Folic acid deficiency
- Bronchial asthma
- Severe allergic reaction
What side effects are possible with Bactrim ?
- CNS: headache, dizziness. In rare cases: aseptic meningitis, depression, apathy, tremor, peripheral neuritis
- Respiratory system: bronchospasm, lung infiltrates
- Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, gastritis, abdominal pain, glossitis, stomatitis, cholestasis, hepatitis, hepatonecrosis
- Haemopoietic organs: leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis
- Urogenital system: polyuria, interstitial nephritis, renal fucntion disorders, hematuria, increased levels of urea, toxic neuropathy accompanied by oliguria and anuria
- Locomotor system: arthralgia, myalgia
- Allergic reactions
- Local reactions: thrombophlebitis if used intramuscularly.
- Other: hypoglycemia
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Bactrim?
The drug should not be used with such groups of drugs as:
- Thiazide diuretics
- Antiepileptics
- Anticoagulants
- Diabetes treatment
- Tuberculosis treatment
- Immunosuppressants
- NSAID's
