How does the medication work?
Clarithromycin is a half-synthetic antibiotic which belongs to a group of antibiotics called macrolids. The medication exerts bacteriostatic action, in high doses bactericidal effects. Antibacterial effect of the medication is associated with inhibiting the synthesis of proteins on the ribosomes of the microbial cells. Besides its antibacterial action macrolides possesses immune-modulating and moderate anti- inflammatory action. Clarithromycin acts both on intra and extracellular pathogens. Antibacterial activity of clarithromycin is much higher in alkalescent or neutral medium than in acid one.
Why is Biaxin prescribed?
Generic Biaxin is used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by sensitive to clarithromycin microorganisms:
- Infections of the upper respiratory system and ENT infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, otitis, sinusitis)
- Infections of the lower respiratory system (including bronchitis, pneumonia, pleuritis)
- Infections of the skin and soft tissue (folliculitis)
- Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with stomach and duodenal ulcers (combined therapy).
When Biaxin should not be taken?
Clarithromycin is contraindicated in the following conditions:
- Severe kidney failure
- Severe lover failure
- Pregnancy (especially 1st trimester)
- Breastfeeding
- Blood disease called porphyria
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients or other macrolide antibiotics
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
The medication can cause the following side effects:
- Cardiovascular system: ventricular arrhythmia, ventricular tachycardia
- Digestive system: nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, glossitis, stomatitis, candidiasis of the mouth cavity, in very rare cases pseudomembranous colitis.
- CNS: headache, dizziness, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, tinnitus
- Sense organs: in individual cases- hear loss.
- Allergic reactions: hives, hyperemia of the skin, itching, anaphylactic reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
- Changes in laboratory indexes: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, increased amount of creatinine in the blood, in rare cases- low sugar blood levels.
- Other: resistance of the microorganisms.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

- Colchicine - Biaxin increases the blood levels of Colchicine
- Cardiac glycosides (Digoxin) - Biaxin may increase the blood levels of digoxin
- Antipsychotics drugs (Pimozide) it may occur dangerous side effects
- Ergot derivatives Biaxin may increase the risk of toxicity of ergot preparations
- HIV treatment Biaxin may changes the effects of certain HIV drugs
- QT-prolonging medication- Biaxin may cause prolonged QT interval
- Statins preparations- Biaxin increases the blood levels of certain statin preparations
- Xantines (theohylline) - Biaxin may increase the blood levels of theophylline
- Blood thinners (Warfarin) Biaxin may increase the risk of hemorrhages
