The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Cipro manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals is available under commercial name Ciprodac.
How does the medication work?
Ciprofloxacin belongs to a group of medicines called fluoroquinolones. The medication possesses a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. The medication inhibits the enzyme DNA-gyrase and thus disturbs the DNA replication and synthesis of cellular proteins. Ciprofloxacin acts both on dividing microorganisms and bacteria staying on resting phase. Ciprofloxacin is effective against gram positive and gram negative aerobic bacteria. The medication does not act on Nocardia asteroides, Clostridium difficile, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Pseudomonas maltophilia, Bacteroides fragilis, Corynebacterium.
Why is Generic Cipro prescribed?
Generic Cipro is indicated in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by susceptible to ciprofloxacin infections:
- Infections of the respiratory system
- ENT infections
- Infections of the kidney and urinary passages
- Genital infections (gonorrhea, prostatitis)
- Gynecological infections (including adnexitis) and post natal infections
- Digestive system infections (including infections of the mouth cavity)
- Infections of the gall bladder of and bile passages
- Infections of the skin, mucous linings and soft tissue
- Apparatus system infections Sepsis
- Peritonitis
- Prophylaxis and treatment of the infections in patients with weak immune system (in therapy with immune depressants)
When Generic Cipro should not be taken?
The medication should not be used if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase
- Pseudomembranous colitis
- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
Ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in atherosclerosis of the brain vessels, disorders of brain's blood circulation, mental diseases, seizures, epilepsy, expressed kidney or liver failure, elderly patients.
In patients with severe kidney failure (creatine clearance less than 20ml/min) the dose should be reduced by 50%.
Avoid direct sun and UV rays during the treatment with Ciprofloxacin
If you experience pain in the joints (tendovaginitis) you should stop taking the medication
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- Ciprofloxacin can cause the following side effects: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, meteorism, anorexia, jaundice, hepatitis, hepatonecrosis.
- CNS: dizziness, headache, increased tiredness, anorexia, agitation, tremor, insomnia, nightmares, sweating, increased intracranial pressure, agitation, confusion, depression, hallucinations, migraine, faint, thrombosis of the cerebral arteries.
- Sense organs: taste and smell changes, vision disorders, tinnitus, decreased hearing
- Cardiovascular system: tachycardia, disorders of the heart rhythm, decreased arterial pressure, hot flashes.
- Haemopoietic system: leukopenia, granulocytopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis, thrombosis, hemolytic anemia.
- Laboratory indexes: hypoprotrombinemia, increased activity of the liver's transaminase, hypercreatininemia, hyperbilirubinemia, hyperglycemia
- Urogenital system: hematuria, crystalluria, glomerulonephritis, dysuria, polyuria, urine retention, urethral bleedings, interstitial nephritis
- Apparatus system: arthralgia, arthritis, tendovaginitis, myalgia, joints damage
- Allergic reactions: itching, hives, erythema.
- Other: pseudomembranous colitis
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.
