How does the medication work?
Cephalexin belongs to a group of antibacterial preparations called cephalosporins. Bactericidal effects of the medication is associated with inhibiting the production of peptidoglycan which is a structural element in the bacterial cell wall. This resulting in increased permeability of the cell wall causing lysis of the microorganisms. Cephalexin exerts its bactericidal effects against a wide variety of gram-positive and negative microorganisms.
Why is Keflex prescribed?
Keflex is indicated in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible to cephalexin microorganisms:
- Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract infections
- Infections of the urogenital system
- Infections of the skin and soft tissue
- Otitis media
- Osteomyelitis
- Gonorrhea
- Endomethritis
When Keflex should not be taken?
The medication should not administered if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Known allergies to
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Upcoming any surgical interventions
- Severe mental health problems
- Severe liver or kidney diseases
During the treatment you may develop positive Cumbs' reaction or false positive urine reaction on glucose
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- CNS: hallucinations, headache, dizziness, drowsiness
- Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, decreased appetite, diarrhea, increased activity of liver transaminase, jaundice, hepatitis.
- Haemopoietic system: leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, itching, dermatitis, Quincke's edema
- Other: arthralgia, candidiasis
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.
