How does the medication work?
Levaquin is preparation which belongs to a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. Levofloxacin is a laevorotatory isomer of ofloxacin. The medication possesses a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity. Levofloxacin blocks the enzyme called DNA-gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, disturbs cross-link of DNA breakage, inhibits DNA synthesis, causes deep morphological changes in cytoplasm, cell wall and membranes. Levofloxacin is active against the majority strains of microorganisms.
Why is Levaquin prescribed?
Levofloxacin is used to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases of light and moderate severity caused by susceptible to the medication microorganisms:
- acute otitis
- aggravation of chronic bronchitis
- infections of the skin and soft tissue
- pneumonia
- aggravation of urogenital infections including pyelonephritis
- prostatitis
- Intraabdominal infection
- Sepsis
When Levaquin should not be taken?
Generic Levaquin should not be taken if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Epilepsy
- Joint damage caused by the treatment with quinolones
- Kidney dysfunction in creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min, being on hemodialysis
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredient
- The medication should be used with caution in deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, elderly patients
During the treatment it is necessary to avoid UV rays
In the case of tendovaginitis and pseudomembranous colitis development, you should stop taking levofloxacin immediately.
In patients with brain damage in anamnesis(stroke, severe trauma) seizures may occur.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, decreased appetite, stomach pain, pseudomembranous colitis, increased activity of liver transaminase, hyperbilirubinemia, hepatitis, disbacteriosis
- Cardiovascular system: decreased arterial pressure, vascular collapse, increased heart rate, prolonged QT interval
- Endocrine system: low sugar blood levels
- CNS: headache, dizziness, tiredness, fatigability, tremor, anxiety, paresthesia, hallucinations, confusion, depression, seizures
- Sense organs: changes in vision, hearing, taste and tactile sensitivity
- Apparatus system: arthralgia, muscular weakness, myalgia, tendinitis, rhabdomyolysis
- Urogenital system: hypercreatinemia, interstitial nephritis, acute kidney failure
- Haemopoietic system: anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, hemorrhages.
- Allergic reactions: itching, edema of the skin and mucous linings, hives, urticaria, erythema, toxic epidermal necrolysis, bronchospasm, shortness of breath, anaphylactic shock, allergic pneumonitis, vasculitis.
- Other: photosensibilization, aggravation of porphyria, super-infection.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

Antacids which contain aluminium, magnesium and calcium
- Arrhythmia medications
- Corticosteroids (glucocorticoids)

- Vitamins and food supplements which contain: aluminium, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron
- Blood thinners (warfarin)
- HIV treatment medicines (didanosine)
- Oral thyroid vaccines
- ACE inhibitors and quinapril-HCTZ
- Hyperphosphataemia prevention drugs (Sevelamer)
- Sucralfate
- Xantines (theophylline)
