How does the medication work?
Cefixime is a 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotic which possesses a broad spectrum action on a wide variety of microorganisms. The medication exerts bactericidal effects. The action mechanism of the medication is associated with inhibiting the synthesis of cellular wall of the bacteria. Cefixime is resistant to the action of beta-lactamases produced by the most gram positive and gram negative microorganisms.
Why is Suprax prescribed?
The medication is used to treat infectious disease caused by susceptible to cefixime microorganisms:
- Pharyngitis
- Tonsillitis
- Sinusitis
- Acute and chronic bronchitis
- Otitis media
- Uncomplicated infections of the urogenital system
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea
When Suprax should not be taken?
The medication should not be taken in:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Severe liver or kidney diseases
The medication should be used with caution in elderly patients, patients with chronic kidney failure or pseudomembranous colitis, children
In kidney dysfunction (creatinine clearance from 21 to 60ml/min) or in patients which are hemodyalisis, the daily dose should be reduced by 25%. In patients with CC ≤20 ml/min or patients which are on parenteral dialysis the daily dose should be reduced by 50%.
In prolonged use of the medication the disorder of normal intestinal micro-flora may occur. This may lead to the growth of Clostridium difficile or cause severe diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis.
Patients with allergic reactions to penicillins in anamnesis may experience hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
During the treatment it may be possible a positive Cumb' reaction or false positive glucose reaction in the urine.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Suprax may cause the following side effects:
- Digestive system: dry mouth, anorexia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, meteorism, increased activity of liver's transaminase, hyperbilirubinemia, jaundice, digestive candidiasis, stomatitis, glossitis, pseudomembranous colitis.
- Haemopoietic system: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia
- CNS: dizziness, headache
- Urogenital system: interstitial nephritis.
- Allergic reactions: itching, hives, hyperemia of the skin, eosinophilia, fever.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Suprax?
- Gout treatment drugs (allopurinol) and diuretics retards the elimination of cefixine out of the organism. This may leads to increased toxicity.
- Blood thinners. The medication enhances the effects of indirect anticoagulants
- Antacids containing magnesium and aluminium hydroxide retards the absorption of cefixime.
