How does the medication work?
Azithromycin belongs to a group of antibacterial preparations called macrolides. Action mechanism of the medication is associated with binding with 50S subunits of the ribosome and inhibiting the biosynthesis of bacterial proteins. In high doses the medication exerts bactericidal effect. The medication is effective against a wide variety of microorganisms including aerobic
gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, intracellular microorganisms.
Why is Zithromax prescribed?
Zithromax is indicated in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible to azithromycin infections:
- Infections of the upper respiratory system and ENT infections including bacterial pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media)
- Infections of the lower respiratory system (including bacterial bronchitis, interstitial and alveolar pneumonia, aggravation of chronic bronchitis])
- Infections of the skin and soft tissue (chronic erythema, Lyme disease, erysipelas, impetigo, dermatosis)
- Sexually transmitted infections (urethritis, cervicitis)
- Gastrointestinal infections associated with Helicobacter pylori
- Chlamydia
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
- Chancroid
When Zithromax should not be taken?
Genenic Zithromax should not be used if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Severe liver or kidney dysfunction
- Hypesensitivity to azithromycin or other components of the medication
- Hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotics
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Children weighting under 45kg
The medication should be used with caution in prolonged QT interval, kidney dysfunction.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Zithromax side effects are observed in rare cases (less than 1% of all patients taking the medication). Zithromax side effects include:
- Digestive system: melena, jaundice, meteorism, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, gastritis, reversible moderate activity increase of liver enzymes
- Urogenital system: nephritis, vaginal candidiasis
- Cardiovascular system: increased heart rate, chest pain
- CNS and peripheral nervous system: dizziness, headache, vertigo, drowsiness, dizziness, in children headache (otitis media treatment), hyperkinesia, neurosis, insomnia.
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, Quincke's edema, hives, conjunctivitis
- Dermatological reactions: photosensibilization
- Dermatological reactions: Neutrophilia, eosinophilia
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.
