Active Ingredients:
- Terbinafine
The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Lamisil manufactured by Cipla is available under commercial name Terbicip.
How does the medication work?
Antifungal agent for oral administration. Terbinafine is an alkylamine which has a broad spectrum of action against fungi that cause diseases of the skin, hair and nails, including dermatophytes such as Trichophyton (eg, T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, T. tonsurans, T . violaceum), Microsporum (eg, M. canis), Epidermophyton floccosum, and yeast fungus Candida (eg, C. albicans) and Pityrosporum. In low concentrations terbinafine has a fungicidal action against dermatophytes, molds and certain dimorphic fungi. The activity against yeasts, depending on their type, may be fungicidal or fungistatic.
Why is Lamisil prescribed?
- Onychomycosis (fungal infection of nails) caused by dermatophytes
- Mycosis of the scalp
- Fungal infections of the skin (treatment of dermatomycoses of body, legs, feet as well as yeast infections of the skin caused by Candida (eg, Candida albicans) in cases where the localization, severity or prevalence of infection determine the advisability of oral therapy)
When Lamisil should not be taken?
- hypersensitivity
- pregnancy, breastfeeding
- with caution: chronic liver and / or renal dysfunction
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Lamisil is generally well tolerated. Side effects are usually mild or moderate. The most frequent side effects include:
- gastrointestinal tract: sense of fullness, appetite loss, dyspepsia, nausea, mild abdominal pain, diarrhea
- skin: rash, urticaria
- locomotor system: arthralgia, myalgia
- taste disturbances
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.
