How does the medication work?
Crestor belongs to a group of anticholesterol medicines called statins. Action mechanism of the medication consists in inhibiting the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase which is responsible for the production cholesterol. By decreasing the production of cholesterol in the liver, rosuvastatin causes LDL receptors to collect more collect more cholesterol from the blood. This helps to reduce cholesterol blood levels. Therapeutic effects of the medication occurs in a week and reaches its maximum in 4 weeks.
Why is Crestor prescribed?
The medication is prescribed for the treatment of the following conditions:
- Primary hypercholesterolemia (type II including familiar heterozygous hypercholesterolemia)
- Mixed hypercholesterolemia
- Familiar homozygous hypercholesterolemia
- Lowering the risk of heart attacks or strokes in patients with atherosclerosis.
When Crestor should not be taken?
You should avoid taking Crestor if any of the following conditions apply:
- Active phase of liver diseases
- Severe kidney failure (creatinine clearance less than 30nml/min)
- Myopathy
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Tendency to myelotoxic complications
- Children and adolescents
Generic Crestor should be used with caution in: liver diseases in anamnesis, sepsis, arterial hypotension, surgical interventions, traumas, severe metabolic, endocrine and electrolyte disorders, uncontrolled epilepsy, high risk of epilepsy: kidney failure, hyperthyrosis, muscle diseases, elderly patients (over 65 years of age), Asian race.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- Allergic reactions: hives, angioedema
- CNS and peripheral nervous system: headache, dizziness, polyneuropathy
- Digestive system: constipation, nausea, stomach pain, increased activity of liver's enzymes, jaundice, hepatitis.
- Dermatological reactions: itching, rash.
- Apparatus system: myalgia, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, arthralgia.
- Urogenital system: proteinuria
- Other: asthenia
