The commercial name of the medication may differ from the brand one. Generic Lipitor manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals is available under commercial name Atorbest.
How does the medication work?
Atorvastatin is a part of anti-cholesterol medication called statins. Action mechanism of the medication is related to inhibiting the activity of enzymes called HMG-CoA-reductase. This enzyme is responsible for catalyzing the conversion of HMG-CoA into the mevalonic acid. Mevalonic acid is a substratum in biosynthesis of cholesterol in the organism. The inhibiting of cholesterol production leads to increased reactivity of LDL receptors which collect and metabolize low density lipoproteins from the blood.
Antisclerosthic effects of the medication is associated with lowering the amount of cholesterol, low density lipoproteins, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides. The medication increases the amount of HDL which is sometimes called good'' cholesterol. The effects of the medication is observed in two weeks after beginning of the therapy. Maximal therapeutic effect is observed in four weeks.
Why is Lipitor prescribed?
Lipitor is used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Primary hypercholesterolemia (lowering high cholesterol blood levels)
- Hypertriglyceridemia
- Mixed hyperlipidemia (including and patients with insulin dependent diabetes)
- Homozygous and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
- Lowering the risk of cardiovascular complications (heart attacks, strokes) associated with atherosclerosis
When Lipitor should not be taken?
Lipitor should not taken if any of the following health conditions apply to you:
- Liver diseases in active stage (including chronic hepatitis, chronic alcoholic hepatitis)
- Liver failure
- Liver cirrhosis of unknown origin
- Increases activity to liver's transaminases of unknown origin
- Diseases of the skeletal muscles
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Children under 18 years of age
The medication should be used with caution in: chronic alcoholism, severe disorders of electrolyte balance, endocrine and metabolic disorders, arterial hypotension, severe acute infections (sepsis), uncontrolled epilepsy, surgical interventions, trauma.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Generic Lipitor may cause the following side effects:
- CNS: headache, drowsiness, asthenia, insomnia, dizziness, nightmares, paresthesia, peripheral neuropathy, emotional lability, ataxia, hyperkinesis, depression, hyperesthesia
- Sense organs: tinnitus, dryness of the conjunctiva, accommodation disorders, loss of taste, glaucoma, deafness
- Cardiovascular system: increased heart rate, vasodilation, migraine, postural hypotension, increased blood pressure, phlebitis, arrhythmia
Haemopoietic system: anemia, thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy.
- Respiratory system: bronchitis, rhinitis, bronchial asthma, nasal bleedings, dyspnoe.
Digestive system: nausea, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, meteorism, stomach pain, abdominal pain, anorexia, increased appetite, dry mouth, belching, dysphagia, vomiting, stomatitis, esophagitis, glossitis, gastroenteritis, hepatitis, liver colic, pancreatitis, jaundice, increased activity of liver's enzymes, rectal bleedings, melena, tenesmus.
- Apparatus system: arthritis, seizures, bursitis, myositis, myopathy, arthralgia, myalgia, rhabdomyolysis, joint seizures
- Urogenital system: urogenital infections, dysuria, urine retention, cystitis, hematuria, vaginal bleedings, uterine bleedings, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders.
Dermatological reactions: alopecia, sweating, eczema, seborrhea
- Allergic reactions: itching, rash, contact dermatitis, hives, angioedema
- Laboratory indexes: hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, albuminuria, increased activity of GPT, GOT.
- Other: peripheral edema, increased body weight, gynecomastia, aggravation of gout.
