Mevacor
Active Ingredients:
- lovastatin
How does the medication work?
Mevacor is hypolipidemic preparation which belongs to a group of medicines called statins. Mevacor works by inhibiting the enzyme called HMG-CoA-reductase. Being a prodrug, Lovastatin contains in its structure lactone ring which is hydrolyzed in the liver into its active form. Lactone ring of statins is similar to the active part of HMG-Co-reductase. This part of lovastatin's molecule binds to HMG-Co-reductase, another part of molecule inhibits the conversion of hydroxymethylglutarate into mevalonate which is intermediate product in the synthesis of cholesterol. Inhibiting the enzyme HMG-Co-reductase leads lowering of cholesterol production in livers. This results in increased activity of LDL receptors causing intensive catabolism of cholesterol (LDL).
Lovastatin also increases the blood levels of good cholesterol called HDL (high density lipoproteins).
Why is Mevacor prescribed?
Generic Mevacor is used for reducing the blood levels of low density lipoproteins in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemoa (type 2a and 2b) when special diet and physical exercises do not bring the positive therapeutic effect.
