Pravachol
Active Ingredients:
- pravastatin
How does the medication work?
Pravachol belongs to a group of anticholesterol medicines called statins. Action mechanism of the medication is associated with inhibiting the enzyme called HMG-Coa-reductase. A molecule of statin binds to CoA of the enzyme and another part of the molecule inhibits the conversion of hydroxymethylglutarate to mevalonate. Inhibiting the activity of HMG-CoA-reductase leads to decreasing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. Decreased production of cholesterol causes liver to collect more cholesterol from the blood. Pravastatin lowers the blood levels of low density and very low density lipoproteins, increases the blood concentration of high density lipoproteins.
