How does the medication work?
Fenofibrate is hypolipidemic medicine which works by lowering the amount of triglycerides and cholesterol. The medication contributes to lowering of low density lipoproteins and very low density lipoproteins, increases the amount of high density lipoproteins which are sometimes called good cholesterol. Action mechanism of the medication is associated with activating the enzyme lipoproteinlypase. Fenofibrate inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids, contributes to increase of LDL receptors in the livers, disturbs the synthesis if cholesterol. Fenofibrate lowers platelets aggregation, lowers the increased level of fibrinogen in the plasma, lowers sugar blood levels in patients with diabetes, decreases the blood levels of uric acid.
Why is Tricor prescribed?
Generic Tricor is used in the treatment of:
- Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia or mixed (dislipedemoa type IIa, IIb, IV) in inefficiency of drug-free modalities.
- Secondary hyperlipoproteinemia
When Tricor should not be taken?
Tricor should not be used if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure (creatinine clearance less than 20ml/min)
- Diseases of the gall bladder
- Lactose insufficiency, lactose intolerance
- Fructose intolerance
- Allergic reaction caused by the peanuts or peanut oil
- Children under 18 years of age
- Photosensibilization in anamnesis
The medication should be used with caution in: kidney dysfunction, hyperthyroidism, patients which abuse alcohol drinking.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Fenofibrate can cause the following side effects:
- Digestive system: stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, meteorism, moderate increased activity of liver's transaminases- pancreatitis, formation of bile stones, hepatitis.
- Apparatus system: myalgia, myositis, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, rhabdomyolysis
- Cardiovascular system: thrombosis of the deep veins, thromboembolia of the pulmonary artery.
- Hemopoeitic system: increased amount of while blood cells.
- Urogenital system: erectile dysfunction
- CNS: headache
- Respiratory system: interstitial pneumopathy.
- Laboratory indexes: increased levels of creatinine and urea
- Allergic reactions: skin rash, itching.
- Dermatological reactions: alopecia, photosensibilisation.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Tricor?
Fenofibrate may interact with the following medicines:
- Blood thinners (warfarin)
- Statins
- Fibrates
- Immune suppression therapy (cyclosporine)
- Bile acid sequestrants (resins): cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevalam
