How does the medication work?
Liothyronine sodium is a synthetic analogue of thyroid hormone liothyronine (also known as T3 or triiodothyronine). Cytomel is indicated when thyroid gland does not produce enough T3 hormnes.
T3 hormone (Liothyronine) is responsible for the growth and development of tissue, it also increases the demand of cells in oxygen, stimulates metabolic reaction of the proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, maintains the functional activity of the heart and blood vessels, regulates central nervous system. In high doses the medication inhibits the production of thyrotropic hormone.
