How does the medication work?
Citalopram belongs to a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. By inhibiting serotonin reuptake Citalopram increases the amount of serotonin in the synaptic gap and therefore improves neuronal cooperations. This helps to relieve depression symptoms. Citaloptam does not act on histamine, muscarinic and adrenergic receptors. Therapeutic effect of the medication usually occurs in 2-4 weeks after beginning the treatment. Citalopram does not act on cardiovascular system.
Why is Celexa prescribed?
Celexa is indicated in the following conditions:
- treatment of depressive diseases and prophylaxis of their recurrences
- treatment of panic disorders with or without or without agoraphobia
- treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders
When Celexa should not be taken?
Celexa should not be used if any of the following conditions:
- Concomitant use of MAO inhibitors, and also a period within 14 days after cessation the therapy with MAO inhibitors.
- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- The medication should be used with caution in kidney or liver dysfunction, seizures in anamnesis, elderly patients.
The dose of the preparation should not exceed 30mg/daily in patients with liver's dysfunction.
In the case of development of maniac condition you should stop taking the medicines.
The medication should be used with caution in patients which require increased attention concentration(drivers, doctors).
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Celexa may cause the following side effects:
CNS: asthenia, increased fatigability,drowsiness or insomnia, agitation, tremor, agitation, amnesia, apathy, aggressive behavior, extrapyramidal symptoms, hallucinations, emotional lability, mania, hypo-mania, panic disorders, psychosis, serotonin syndrome.
Digestive system: dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, hypersalivation, meteorism, diarrhea, stomach pain, anorexia
Cardiovascular diseases: bradycardia, decreased blood pressure, hypotension, abnormal heart rhythm
Hemopoietic system: thrombocytopenia, bleedings
Sense organs: mydriasis, accommodation paresis, taste changes
Urogenital system: ejaculation problems, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, disturbances of the menstrual cycle, in rare cases mastodynia, galactorrhea
Allergic reactions: skin rash, rarely toxic epidermal necrosis, rhinitis, sinusitis
Other: hyperthermia, polyuria, low sodium blood levels, urination problems, arthralgia, myalgia, greeting of teeth.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.
