How does the medication work?
Generic Prozac selectively block serotonon reuptake (5HT) in the synapses of the neurons of the central nervous system. The inhibiting of serotonin reuptake leads to increase the amount of neuromediators in the synaptic gap, enhances and prolongs its action on post synaptic receptors. This helps to relieve depression symptoms. In therapeutic doses prozac blocks serotonin reuptake by the platelets, is antagonist of muscarinic, histamine H1, noradrenergic, alpha 1 and alpha2 receptors, particularly does not act on dopamine and dopamine receptors. The medication contributes to improvement of mood, decreases fear, eliminates dysphoria, lowers appetite. Fluoxetine does not cause sedative effects, causes reduction of obsessive-compulsive disorders. In therapeutic doses the medication does not affect cardiovascular system.

When prozac should not be taken?
The medication should not be taken in:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

- Epilepsy

Fluoxetine may change the effects of work which require a high speed of psychotic and physical reactions.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- CNS: mania and hypomania, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, headache, tremor, hyperirritability, sleep disturbances, increased fatigability, dizziness, decreased libido.
- Gastrointestinal tract: decreased appetite, taste changes, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, diarrhea.
- Urogenital system: urine retention, vaginitis, dysmenorrhea, erectile dysfunction,
- Dermatological reactions: skin rash, itching, fever, muscle pain, low sodium blood vessels, increased heart rate, vision changes, anorexia and decreased body weight.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with fluoxetine?
Prozac should not be taken in combination with:
- Tranquilizers (alprazolam, dizepam)
- NSAID's including and Aspirin
- Seizures medications
- Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)
- Certain antibiotics (Linezolid)
- Lithium preparations
- MAO inhibitors
- NSAID's
- Other antidepressants including SSRI or SNRI, tricyclic antidepressants
- Narcotic pain killers (tramadol)
- Triptans
- Tryptophan
- Warfarin
Let your doctor know if you are taking any of the above mentioned medicines or other preparations including herbals, vitamins and food supplements as they may change the effectiveness or increase the risk of fluoxetine side effects.
