How does the medication work?
Lexapro is an antidepressants which belongs to a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The inhibiting of serotonin reuptake increases its concentration in the synaptic gap, enhances and prolongs its action on post synaptic receptors. All of these helps to relieve the symptoms of depression. Escitalopram does not bind to serotonine, dopamine, adrenergic, H1 histamine, cholinergic, benzodiazepine and opioid receptors.
Why is Lexapro prescribed?
Lexapro is indicated in the treatment of:
- Depressive episodes of unknown severity
- Panic disorders with or without agoraphobia
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
When Lexapro should not be taken?
Lexapro is contraindicated in the following conditions:
- concomitant use of MAO inhibitors
- pregnancy
- breastfeeding
- children under 15 years of age
- severe cardiovascular diseases
- severe liver diseases
- severe kidney diseases
- hypersensitivity to escitalopram and other components of the medication
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- Digestive system: nausea, decreased appetite, vomiting, dry mouth, changes in laboratory indexes, changes in liver's enzymes
- CNS and peripheral nervous system: insomnia, dizziness, weakness, taste changes, serotonin syndrome, hallucinations, mania, agitation, anxiety, depersonalization, panic attacks, hyperirritability.
- Metabolism: sweating, hyperthermia, low sodium blood levels
- Urogenital system: decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problem, anorgasmia
- Cardiovascular system: orthostatic hypotension.
- Endocrine system: galactorrhea, insufficient secretion of ADH
- Apparatus system: arthralgia, myalgia
- Allergic reactions: anaphylactic reactions, angioedema
- Dermatological reactions: skin rash, itching, purpura.
- Other: sinusitis, urine retention.
- In sudden cessation of therapy: dizziness, headache, nausea (withdrawal symptoms).

What are possible drug to drug interactions associated with Lexapro?
Lexapro should not be taken in combination with:
- Alcohol
- MAO inhibitors
- H2 histamine receptor blockers (cimetidine)
- Lithium preparations
- Other SSRI or SNRI medications
- NSAID's
- Antimycotics (ketoconazole)
- Antipsychotics (pimozide)
- Triptans
- Tryptophan
- Blood thinners
- St.John's wort
