How does the medication work?
Sertraline hydrochloride belongs to a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. In clinical doses the medication blocks the reuptake of serotonin in the platelets and increase the amount of serotonin in the synaptic gap. This helps to improve the cooperation between nerve cells and relieve depression symptoms. Sertraline does not possess an affinity to cholinergic, serotonin, dopamine, histamine, adrenergic receptors. The medication also does not increase body weight.
Why is Zoloft prescribed?
Generic Zoloft is used in:
- Treatment and prophylaxis of depressive conditions of different severity accompanied with fear and suicidal attempts.
- Neuropathic and somatoform depression
- Post-traumatic stress disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive disorders
- Treatment of panic disorders accompanied with phobias
- Treatment of nervous anorexia, bulimia and chronic pain syndrome
When Zoloft should not be taken?
You should not take Zoloft if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Epilepsy
- Children under 6 years of age
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- The medication should be used with caution in: organic disorders of the brain, epilepsy, kidney or liver failure, decreased body weight.
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
Zoloft may cause the following side effects:
- Digestive system: dry mouth, decreased appetite, dyspepsia, stomach spasms, pancreatitis, hepatitis, jaundice, liver failure.
- Nervous system: drowsiness, headache, dizziness, tremor, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, hypomania, mania, paresthesia, hallucination, psychosis, hyperirritability, tremor, dyskinesia, gait disorders.
- Urogenital system: ejaculation retention, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, anorgasmia, disorders of the menstrual cycle, gynecomastia, priapism, galactorrhea.
- Sense organs: vision disorders
- Cardiovascular system: increased heart rate, arterial hypertension, edema, faint
- Respiratory system: asphyxia, chest pain
- Laboratory indexes: reversible increase the activity of transaminases, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, low sodium blood levels.
- Other: nasal bleedings, hypothyroidism, increased sweating, decreased body weight, fatigability, hot flashes.
Sudden cessation the therapy may cause withdrawal symptoms

- Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)

- Certain antibiotics (linezolid)

- Other antidepressant including SSRI or SNRI, tricyclic antidepressant
- Narcotic analgesics (Tramadol)
- St.John's wort
- Triptans
- Tryptophan
