How does the medication work?
Antidiarrheal symptomatic medication. Binding to opioid receptors of the intestinal wall, loperamide reduces the tone and motility of the intestine smooth muscles. Slows peristalsis and increases the time of passage of intestinal bulk. Increases tone of the anal sphincter. Supports the retention of stool and decreases defecation urge.
Why is Loperamide prescribed?
- Symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea of allergic, emotional, drug and radiation genesis
- Diarrhea caused by dietary changes, quality of food, malabsorption and metabolism disorders
- As an adjunct in diarrhea of infectious origin
- Regulation of stool in patients with ileostomy
When Loperamide should not be taken?
- Diverticulosis
- Bowel obstruction
- Acute ulcerative colitis
- Diarrhea in the background of acute pseudomembranous enterocolitis
- Monotherapy in dysentery and other gastrointestinal infections
- I trimester of pregnancy, lactation
- Pediatric patients
- Hypersensitivity
- With caution: liver failure
