How does the medication work?
Ranitidine is an antiulcer drug. Which works by competitively and reversibly blocking the histamine H2-receptors in parietal cells of gastric mucosa. Suppresses basal and stimulated secretion of hydrochloric acid, increase the the pH of gastric juice. Does not reduce the level of Ca2+ in patients with hypercalcemia. Ranitidine is a weak inhibitor of liver microsomal enzyme system.
Why is Ranitidine prescribed?
Treatment and prevention of:
- stomach ulcer and duodenal ulcer
- NSAID-gastropathy
- heartburn (associated with hyperchlorhydria)
- hypersecretion of gastric juice
- symptomatic gastrointestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, reflux esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- systemic mastocytosis, multiple endocrine adenomatosis
- chronic dyspepsia characterized by epigastric or retrosternal pain associated with eating
- treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding
- prevention of recurrence of gastric bleeding in the postoperative period and aspiration of gastric juice in patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia (Mendelson syndrome)
- aspiration pneumonitis (prevention)
When Ranitidine should not be taken?
- hypersensitivity
- lactation
- with caution: renal and / or hepatic insufficiency, acute porphyria (incl. history), hepatic cirrhosis with portosystemic encephalopathy in history, pediatric patients, pregnancy
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- nervous system and sensory organs: headache, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, vertigo, anxiety, depression, rare - confusion, hallucinations (especially in elderly and debilitated patients), temporary blurred vision, disturbance of eye accommodation
- cardiovascular system and blood (hematopoiesis, hemostasis): arrhythmia, tachycardia / bradycardia, AV block, decreased blood pressure, temporary leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, granulocytopenia
- digestive tract: nausea, vomiting, constipation / diarrhea, abdominal discomfort / pain
- locomotor system: rare - arthralgia, myalgia
- allergic reactions: skin rash, bronchospasm, fever, eosinophilia
