How does the medication work?
Furosemide belongs to a group of drugs called loop diuretics. The diuretic effect of the preparation maybe described as rapidly achieved, strong but short-termed diuresis. The preparation exerts natriuretic and chloruretic effects, increases the release of K+, Ca2+, Mg2+. The preparation also exerts secondary effects which are expressed in release of intra renal mediators and changes of intra renal blood flow. If used once may not exert the above mentioned effects. The preparation exerts hypotensive effects due to an increase in NaCl release and a decrease of vessel smooth muscle constriction a s well as a decrease in overall blood volume.
Why is Furosemide prescribed?
The preparation is prescribed in the following conditions:
- Edema syndrome I chronic heart failure II-II degree, liver cirrhosis, renal disease
- Acute lung edema
- Cerebral edema
- Hypertonic crisis
- Arterial hypertension
- Hypercalcemia
- Eclampsia
- Forced diuresis
When Furosemide should not be taken?
The preparation should not be taken in:
- Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparations
- Acute renal failure with anuria
- Severe liver failure
- Liver coma
- Urogenital duct stenosis
- Gout
- Specific cardiovascular disorders
or used with extreme caution in the following cases:
- Prostate gland hyperplasia
- Pancreatitis
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Diabetes
- Aterosclerosis
What side effects are possible with the medicine ?
- Cardiovascular system: decreased arterial pressure, orthostatic hypertension, collapse, tachycardia, arrhythmia, decreased overall blood volume
- CNS: dizziness, headache, myasthenia, local seizures, paresthesia, apathy, weakness, somnolence, confusion, inertness.
- Sensory organs: vision changes, hearing changes
- Gastrointestinal tract: decreased appetite, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, jaundice, pancreatitis.
- Urogenital system: oliguria, acute urine retention, interstitial nephritis, hematuria, impotence.
- Allergic reactions
- Haemopoietic system: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia
- Water-electrolyte balance disorder
- Hyperglycemia and etc.
If any of these side effects occur during the treatment seek medical attention immediately.
