How does the medication work?
Erectile dysfunction drug. Sildenafil is the first medication of a new group of drugs known as inhibitors of phosphodiesterase 5-th type. The drug dilates the blood vessels of the penis during sexual arousal. As a result, the blood flow to the penis increases that contributes to achieve a normal erection.
Sildenafil has no direct relaxing effect on isolated corpus cavernosum but enhances the relaxing effect of nitric oxide on this tissue through inhibition of PDE5 which is responsible for the degradation of cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) in the cavernous body.
